The Fargo Railroad Co. are a southern rock / americana inspired 4 piece band from Sheffield, UK.

Established in 2013 they have already gathered a loyal fan base and continue to add to their numbers playing shows throughout the UK.
What is clear is that these boys enjoy being on stage and love playing the music they are producing.

They share a distinct and united love of music with a breadth of appreciation that is truly eclectic – all of this has come together to form their current sound, which has settled in the broad and deep ocean of Southern Rock. Looking at the mighty works of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Marshall Tucker Band, ’38 Special etc, doffing a cap to the sweet 70’s sound of Cash, Young, Dylan whilst bringing in more contemporary vibes of Blackberry Smoke and Jason Isbell.

Terra Lightfoot (CAN) http://www.bpa-live.com/terra-lightfoot-can/ Tue, 01 Aug 2017 12:29:09 +0000 http://www.bpa-live.com/?p=2566

With New Mistakes, Canada’s Terra Lightfoot offers up something rare: the kind of genuine document that can only come from a road-tested breed of songwriter and performer. Shot through with the guitarist-vocalist’s powerful, bluesy soul, vivid lyrics and ferocious six-string virtuosity, it’s an unforgettable outing.

From the ground-shaking stomp of “Paradise” and wild-eyed energy of “Pinball King” that open the set to the
psychedelic, gospel-tinged album closer “Lonesome Eyes,” the steeltown native’s third record distills her
masterful talent to its electrifying essence.

Produced by Gus van Go and Werner F (Arkells, Sam Roberts Band, Wintersleep), New Mistakes is a heady journey. As poignant as it is rollicking and vulnerable as it is rowdy, it cruises long and sometimes lonesome highways that lead everywhere from brokedown dive bars and endless prairie skies to mountain ranges and the Mojave Desert.

Built around Lightfoot’s killer live band — Maury LaFoy (bass), Joel Haynes (drums) and Jeff Heisholt (keyboards) — the session impresses on all counts. It’s Lightfoot’s hungriest and most raw album to date, able to mesmerize with graceful melodies one moment, and step into the ring to deliver a hurricane of hooks or a heart-wrenching chorus the next. Lifted by bright waves of organ and classic roots-rock vibe, “Ruthless” nails that lethal dynamic, slowly building a story of deep connection fraught by distance, until letting loose its knockout crescendo.

Lightfoot’s stunning, soulful voice powers her emotional wallops, laid low as a gentle whisper over the swirling finger-picking of “You Get High,” or belted out with nuclear swagger over the rock ’n’ soul grooves of “Hold You,” battling things out with a righteous Jake Clemons sax solo during its climax.

And the only forces that can go toe-to-toe with Lightfoot’s vocal prowess are her guitar chops. “Slicked Back Kid” is a bluesy scorcher, barreling forward with monster riffs, dappled with hits of slide guitar work from guest vocalist Oliver Wood. “Stars Over Dakota” lays down blistering ‘70s grooves between feral blasts of overdrive as Lightfoot howls across the American midwest to someone she can’t stop thinking about. “Drifter” reflects on love long past, with her emotive guitar playing saying what the lyrics cannot.

That’s not to say she’s a tentative wordsmith. Lightfoot’s evolution into a potent songwriter might be captured best on the poignant “Norma Gale”. The tune tells the real life story of its namesake’s battle to make it as a songwriter and bass player in the colourful world of ‘70s country music, fighting to pursue her passion while raising her son alone and touring non-stop. It’s easy to hear why Gale’s story would resonate with Lightfoot: As tried and true road-dogs, they’re kindred spirits, both driven by a creative force they’d be willing to let tear them apart if it had to. And sometimes it does. But, as Lightfoot wails in the song’s transcendent finish—though the trek so far has beenlong and treacherous, and isn’t likely to let up—“I knew I had to keep on going.” That’s how she got here, after all.

It’s Lightfoot’s relentless commitment to the cause that made this album possible: racking up endless, hardearned miles, forging and letting go of relationships, and seeking out every sliver of truth in a life on the road that is anything but easy to navigate. It’s an odyssey without a map to guide the way, filled with infinite missteps. But if they all sound as wild and beautiful as this, let’s hope Terra Lightfoot never stops making New Mistakes.

Ana Silvera (UK) http://www.bpa-live.com/ana-silvera-uk/ Tue, 16 May 2017 12:38:11 +0000 http://www.bpa-live.com/?p=2463

Since the release of debut album ‘The Aviary’ in 2012 (Karamel Music Collective), singer-songwriter Ana Silvera’s work has garnered broad acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Recorded on both sides of the Atlantic, and featuring arrangements from Maxim Moston (Antony and the Johnsons), The Aviary has been described as ‘haunting grown-up fairy tales’ (Metro) and ‘a stunning album’ of ‘magical storytelling’ (The Guardian).

Raised in London, Ana’s upbringing fostered a love of folk music as well as the art of storytelling and poetry from her mother who was a writer and teacher. After studying voice at Guildhall School of Music as a teenager, and then literature at University College London, Ana began to write and record her original music for the first time on the guitar whilst living in the hills of Ibiza. Later, her wanderings drew her to live for stints in Berlin, where she explored electronic music; to New York where she recorded a significant part of ‘The Aviary’ and collaborated with filmmaker Ryan Foregger on the eerie ‘Hometown’ video; and most recently to the serene beauty of Copenhagen with its lakes and spires.

In 2011, Ana was commissioned to write and perform a seven part song cycle entitled ‘Oracles’ for three successive nights at the Roundhouse Studios. Subsequently, Ana was invited back to the main stage of the Roundhouse, co-headlining with Imogen Heap for their 2012 Reverb Festival to perform Oracles plus a new commission written for the Estonian Television Girls Choir, “Step Onto The Ground, Dear Brother!” written alongside composer Max de Wardener. The sold out show – also reprised the following night at Sage Gateshead – was hailed as ‘captivating’ (Artsdesk) and Ana described as a ‘rising star’ (The Guardian). Oracles went on to be nominated for a British Composer Award in the same year. In 2013, Ana was invited to collaborate with the Royal Ballet to co-create, compose, and perform in a new full-length work entitled ‘Cassandra’. ‘Cassandra’ was premiered at the Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House in October 2014. In 2015, Ana’s collaboration with early music ensemble Concerto Caledonia was released on Delphian Records.

2016 saw Ana expand her work into the areas of social justice, via a collaboration with London-based organisation Freedom from Torture in which she created a musical piece with torture survivors alongside dramaturge Christine Bacon as well as performances of her own work at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Iceland Airwaves festival and Union Chapel (singing composer Emily Hall’s music).

In 2017, the live recording of Oracles will be released alongside live footage of the performance. Ana is currently recording songs for her next album in Paris and dates will be announced soon for future performances both in the UK and Europe.

Chris Pureka (USA) http://www.bpa-live.com/chris-pureka-usa/ Mon, 24 Apr 2017 14:58:50 +0000 http://www.bpa-live.com/?p=2432

It’s rare for an artist to bridge the divide between critical acclaim and dedicated fan engagement. Chris Pureka is a Portland-based singer-songwriter whose body of work has resonated deeply with these seemingly disparate milieus. Her bold vulnerability in processing the intimacies of her life in song has long appealed to those listeners who crave authenticity. Now, five years coming, she shares with us another powerful entry in her life’s work, her sixth release, the aptly titled, Back in the Ring.

Chris’s elegant emotionality as a vocalist, and her flair and immediacy as a lyricist have garnered her favorable comparisons to Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, and Patty Griffin. She’s earned accolades from such distinguished taste-making outlets as The New York Times, Paste, Magnet, Billboard.com, and The AllMusic Guide. She’s shared the stage with such diverse and esteemed artists as Dar Williams, The Lumineers, The Cowboy Junkies, Gregory Alan Isakov, Martin Sexton, and Ani DiFranco.

Chris’s journey in music mirrors her path toward self-discovery. At 16, writing songs became a way of journaling. “I was shy and introverted, and songwriting was a very personal process. I never had any intention of performing,” she shares. Post high school, she went on to complete a biology degree at Wesleyan University, and afterwards, worked in a microbiology research lab at Smith College. Meanwhile, she established a music career parallel to her biology work through touring and issuing a clutch of well-received indie releases. In 2006, when Chris found herself turning down too many opportunities as a musician, she shifted her priorities to become a full-time artist.

Her latest album, Back in the Ring, is Chris’s first studio full length since 2010’s critically acclaimed How I Learned to See in the Dark. “I’m not interested in releasing songs I can’t get behind or records I don’t love,” she says of the five-year span between albums. The title of her latest playfully suggests something of an artistic comeback, but it also references the album’s themes of relationship conflict and making the decision to fight back against dark inner demons.

“My music is the outward expression of the work I’m doing internally. What I do comes from my experiences, and I strive to express these experiences authentically. Speaking my truth, and being myself, is the way that I connect with people,” Chris confides.  Her rise as an esteemed artist with captivating emotional integrity has been organic and always on her own terms. For someone who never had an intention of being a professional musician, it’s been a life of far-reaching changes and unexpected rewards.

“As timeless as Bob Dylan or Patty Griffin, and with a grace not unlike Gillian Welch” – New Noise Magazine

“If her instruments act like sonar, expanding to fill any room and find every crevice, her voice is a single directional beam” – NPR

“Dynamic, breathy vocals a la Chan Marshall.” – Magnet
