In 2007 Bob Paterson and Steve Fernie formed a live music promotions company called Movers & Shakers with the sole aim of bringing high quality live music to their home county of Suffolk.
Since September 2007 they have promoted Jacqui McShee's Pentangle, Ralph McTell, Martin Carthy with Dave Swarbrick, John Renbourn with Robin Williamson, Martin Simpson, Chris Difford (from Squeeze) and Keep It Cash at The Fisher Theatre in Bungay (Suffolk). They have also promoted Ian Hunter, Show of Hands, Dr Feelgood, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, The Hamsters, Ralph McTell, Martyn Joseph and Glenn Tilbrook in Ipswich; Oysterband acoustic and Ralph McTell in Bury St Edmunds and the cricket commentator (and bon viveur) "My Dear Old Thing" Henry Blofeld in Norwich.
Throughout May 2009 Movers & Shakers ran a series of classical music concerts in various Suffolk churches with a band they created and sourced called "Classifications". They hope to re-run the series in 2010.
The programme for 2010 is as varied as the line up above.
They launch their most adventurous music programme to date this autumn. The season kicks off with Richard Digance and his one man music and comedy show at The St Nicholas Centre in Ipswich on 18th September.
Early last year they promoted the brilliant Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain at The Ipswich Corn Exchange. Following a hugely successful sell-out first show they are appearing this time at The Ipwich Regent on 23rd October. Do please buy tickets for this show, and all shows for that matter, well in advance as you will be disappointed if you are expecting to buy tickets on the night.
Welsh singer songwriter Martyn Joseph had a flurry of Top 50 hit singles in the early 1990s notably “Dolphins Make Me Cry”. Since then he has carved out a rich touring circuit in the UK. He returns to The St Nicholas Centre on the 12th November.
Everybody knows "Streets of London" by Ralph McTell. His live shows are always so warm and varied each time you see him live. In recent years Movers & Shakers have promoted Ralph in Bury St Edmunds, Woodbridge, Ipswich and Bungay. This autumn they are taking him to Lincolnshire - The Drill Hall Lincoln on 16th November and The Stamford Corn Exchange on the 17th November.
A weekend of fine acoustic, folk and dance music is happening at the end of November when British songwriting maestros Show of Hands - accompanied again by Miranda Sykes - comes to The Ipswich Corn Exchange on 26th November. Their last 2 shows in Ipswich sold out well in advance. Two nights later, folk supergroup and dance hipsters Bellowhead play The Ipswich Corn Exchange for a largely standing (and hopefully dancing) show. Bellowhead are a multi-talented group of 11 musicians and this year have won ‘Best Live Band’ for an incredible 4th time at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and their singer Jon Boden was voted ‘Folk Singer of the Year’. "With the exception of the Who, Bellowhead are surely the best live act in the country" - The Independent.
Finally, to round off a great season of live music, multi BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards winners LAU play The St Nicholas Centre on the 3rd December. LAU are a formidable trio of three of the finest & most innovative exponents of modern traditional music in Britain today. Their now infamous live shows are a must-see experience with an energy and musicianship which is spellbinding. They promise to set the place alight (not literally it is hoped) and to pave the way for more high calibre live music in 2011 care of Movers & Shakers.
